Remember when?
Where were you when?
Oh, I was.....
And I remember right after that......
Do those phrases sound familiar? I bet they do. We've all said them. We'll say them again today. Because today is Where Were You Wednesday. Below is an event.....tell where you were and what you were doing when you heard the news.
I'm sorry to start off with such a sad Where Were You When, but I remember this time so vividly.
I was driving down the driveway (we had/have a really long driveway!) with my kids in the car. We were on our way to my daughter's soccer game. My hubby was walking up the driveway with the newspaper and he told me the news.
"Did you hear about Princess Di?" Him--hubby.
"No what?" Me!
"She died last night." Him--
Me--tearing up. "No. What happened."
I don't remember exactly what he said here--something about the car wreck.
I started crying and kept crying all the way to the soccer game.
Of course I didn't know her, but we were the same age, we had children the same age--she was someone I identified with.
And she was so beautiful--and had those darling boys.
My friend Julie and I went downtown to sign the guest book when it came to Atlanta.
So, Where Were You?

I was sitting in our living room, watching some silly show when my husband, Dan called out from the office.
"Princess Diana's been in an accident."
No way! I flipped the channel to the news where they just broke the news of the wreck. Two people were dead but Diana only had a broke arm. I stayed up until 4 when it was announced that she had died.
Like you, Diana was my age--I had gotten up at 4 o'clock in the morning to watch her wedding and then woke up sixteen years later to watch her funeral. The biggest thing that came out of this situation for me was it got me on the computer--up until that moment, the most I ever did was play games.
Patty--I watched the wedding, too! UP early but is was worth it.
And I'm glad you got on the computer. Now we have more great books to read.
And regarding Diana--It's weird how we relate to people we've never met.
She was such a part of our culture, our international culture. We fought with her emotionally, we felt with her the betrayal of being only to provide heirs, and we wanted her to win in love. I admired her for the desire to be a truly loving mother. Where was I? Glued to the news! I just recently watched the show about Diana at 50. I wish she'd had that birthday.
Angie
I loved Princess Diana. To the world, it looked like a fairy tale come true when she married Prince Charles. And because she came across as so normal, I think it gave young women and girls hope that they too could find their Prince Charming.
I was in Hawaii when I learned of Diana's death. We'd been there a week, totally out of touch with reality. We were leaving that day. I happened to flip the TV on while packing. Prince Charles was standing beside an airplane. The caption at the bottom of the screen read, "Plane containing Princess Diana's body."
My heart dropped to my feet. I cried. Packing kind of fell by the wayside then as I plopped my bottom at the foot of the bed and refused to budge until it was time to leave.
I remember feeling a bit indignant that Charles was there to receive her. After all, he'd hurt her so. Ruined their happily ever after. When I voiced my opinions, my husband said, "She's still the mother of his children."
Oh. I hadn't thought of it that way.
Diana does indeed live on in her sons. She was adamant they have as much of a normal life as possible. She exposed them to other people's struggles, not just the finer things in life. She made them care. She made us care.
Like Angie, I wish she'd had that 50th bithday too.
Eight months pregnant with my first child. There was another tragedy around the same time. Do you remember what it was? I remember thinking, wow, what a depressing time to bring a baby into the world. Probably prego hormones.:)
Ang,
We did fight for her in all those ways. And I believe she was in love when she died.

Mindy---my ever romantic friend. Her wedding was like a fairy tale. And we all wanted the whole thing to be real.
Do you remember the song Elton John wrote for her?
I found my cd, unopened--because I was sure it was going to bring me some crazy sum of money one day--the other day. :)
I'm like Patty. I was up so late, and stayed up watching until after I heard she died.
Ciara, I'm wracking my brains. Didn't John Kennedy die soon after?
Ciara---I didn't remember another tragedy but I googled and found there was a plane crash where something like 230 people were killed.
i guess it's kind of like Farrah Fawcett's death being overshadowed by MJ's.
I liked Farrah, too!!
Missy--there's something about watching it all. Had I known, I would have been up too!
Lindi, I still have my cassette tap of that song unopend as well. Priceless.
Mindy--what's a cassette? Ha!! JK.
Great minds think alike. :)
I don't remember exactly what I was doing, but about a week later I got married. My mother in law had watched the funeral because it seems like that occurred on the day of my wedding. I was sorry to hear about her death, but I remember my mother in law's reaction even more.
Christy--Isn't it weird how an event consumes some peoples lives and some don't remember.
